The Driving Force of Thailand’s Economy: Voices and Capacities of Migrant Populations
Behind every favourite dish, beautiful bouquet, or towering skyscraper lies the labour and dedication of countless individuals. Among them are migrant workers.
Prevention and protection from human trafficking and upholding labour rights for migrant workers
Human trafficking in Thailand primarily occurs in the context of large-scale labour migration from neighboring Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Myanmar. Because effective recruitment systems and migration governance frameworks are not universally applied, migrant workers remain vulnerable to exploitation at various points during the migration process.
Our work is to ensure that migrants in Thailand access protection services and labour entitlements as stipulated in the Thai law. WVFT implements integrated services and sectoral programmes for migrant workers, integrating health, decent work, and social protection services in the fisheries, agriculture, construction and manufacturing sectors. As part of this programme, WVFT also leverages its effective training model, collaboration and engagement with community-based migrant health volunteers to conduct outreach on labour rights and referral to service providers.
To resource this multi-sector and integrated approach to service delivery, WVFT has built relationships with a range of donors and development partners including IOM, WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, ILO Winrock International, USAID, and the EU.
In 2023, the Anti-Human Trafficking Decent Work programme reached a total of
