Amid the fast pace of modern life and the nonstop nature of the online world, mental health challenges among Gen Z adolescents are becoming a silent crisis that Thai society cannot afford to ignore. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, World Vision Foundation of Thailand partnered with the Children and Youth Council of Bangkok, the Department of Mental Health, Four Flowers, and the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand to host a panel discussion and exhibition as part of the \u2018Art for Healing: Gen Z\u2019<\/strong> initiative. The event provided a creative space where young people could harness the power of art to support their emotional well-being.<\/p>

A Crisis That Numbers Alone Cannot Capture: Data from the Department of Mental Health and other relevant agencies paint a deeply concerning picture. A Mental Health Check-In <\/strong>survey found that 61.07% of young people in Bangkok experience stress and are at risk of depression. Meanwhile, 30% of children and adolescents ages 12\u201318 in Bangkok experience high levels of stress\u2014a rate above the national average.<\/p>

In addition, a report from the Department of Mental Health found that 12.7% had depression and 3.9% were at risk of suicide. These figures are more than statistics; they reflect the voices of young people who need someone to listen.<\/p>

In his opening remarks, Harley Hamilton, Director of Fundraising and Fund Management <\/strong>and chair of the event, underscored the importance of the issue: \u201cFor more than 50 years, World Vision Foundation of Thailand has worked to improve the lives of vulnerable children living in poverty across the country. We have now established a new strategy that prioritizes the mental health of children and young people, particularly Gen Z adolescents, who need appropriate care and support. We recognize that this issue directly affects their development and future quality of life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Mr. Harley <\/strong>added that the event was not only a learning space for young people but also an opportunity for participating organizations to learn from their perspectives and experiences. He thanked the Children and Youth Council of Bangkok, the Department of Mental Health, Four Flowers, and the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand for their partnership in making this meaningful event possible.<\/p>

\u2018It\u2019s Okay Not to Be Okay\u2019: <\/strong>A Message from Ms. Suchawalee Mankhong, Mental Health and Psychosocial <\/strong>Support Specialist at World Vision Foundation of Thailand to All Young People. A key part of the event was a panel discussion titled \u2018Ways to Heal: For Gen Z,\u2019 <\/strong>during which Bonnie spoke candidly about the challenges facing young people today:<\/p>

\u201cWe have to acknowledge that young people today face far more than previous generations did. In the past, we had greater control over the factors around us. We did not have the overwhelming volume of news and opinions constantly at our fingertips that we do today\u2014and all of this directly affects our mental well-being.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Suchawalee explained that adolescence is a period of simultaneous change across many dimensions\u2014physical, psychological, emotional, social, and cognitive. With social media adding another layer of complexity, mental health support becomes essential in helping young people navigate both the world around them and the changes within themselves.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

What left the strongest impression on the audience was her closing message: \u201cIt\u2019s okay not to be okay… Not being okay does not mean you have no value. It does not mean you cannot get back up or that better days will never come. Whether you are happy or struggling, I want you to recognize and understand your emotions and fully experience each moment. Be yourself, and allow yourself to learn and grow through it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Art: A Safe Space Beyond Words. Beyond the panel discussion, the event was filled with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Young participants explored a variety of exhibition booths and activities, including drawing and coloring, writing exercises to express what was in their hearts, free copies of the book CYBER Bullying, <\/strong>which helps young people recognize and prevent online bullying, and various forms of art therapy designed to reflect the Gen Z lifestyle and its emphasis on self-expression and freedom of thought.<\/p>

Art became a bridge between feelings that can be difficult to put into words and an outside world ready to listen. Many young people sat down to draw, color, and create with care in a space where they knew that, whatever they expressed, someone would see them, listen attentively, and accept them for who they are.<\/p>

The event is part of the ongoing commitment of World Vision Foundation of Thailand and its partners to create emotionally safe spaces for young people, promote preventive mental health care, and build emotional resilience among the younger generation navigating an urban environment where stress can be found at every turn. This work aligns with sustainable development efforts to advance health and well-being for people of all ages.<\/p>

Caring for your mental health is not a sign of weakness\u2014it is the first step toward growth.
