In Pho Mak Khaeng Subdistrict, Bueng Khong Long District, Bueng Kan Province,<\/strong> many young children grow up in families that rely on rubber farming for their livelihoods. Parents typically leave home late at night to tap rubber trees and return in the early morning, leaving many children to arrive at school without having eaten breakfast.<\/p>

When World Vision Foundation of Thailand <\/strong>(WVFT) began working in the area in 2016, one of the key challenges identified was the nutrition and school readiness of young children. It was clear that this issue could not be solved by any single organization working alone.<\/p>

Ms. Chotika Yotphonphinet, Director of the Education, Religion, and Culture Division of the Pho Mak Khaeng Subdistrict Administrative Organization, <\/strong>recalled that World Vision\u2019s involvement was not simply about introducing a project, but about bringing people together.<\/p>

“When World Vision came, meetings were organized and committees were formed. Representatives from the Subdistrict Administrative Organization, the community, the hospital, schools, and parents had opportunities to come together, discuss issues, and find solutions. World Vision acted as the coordinator,” she explained.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Through discussions among multiple stakeholders, the Breakfast for Bright Futures Project <\/strong>was launched in 2017. World Vision Thailand provided funding for breakfast meals and milk for children attending local Child Development Centers.<\/p>

“They supported breakfast meals with a budget of 20 baht per child and also provided small cartons of milk. It was a very good program,” <\/em> Ms. Chotika said.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The impact of the program became evident within a short period of time.<\/strong><\/p>

Ms. Chotika described the changes she personally observed: “We noticed that the children were healthier, more attentive in class, and able to concentrate better on their learning.”<\/em><\/p>

Teachers and caregivers also saw significant improvements. Children had more energy throughout the day, were less irritable, and were more prepared to participate in learning activities because they no longer had to struggle with hunger during the morning hours.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

After several years of implementation, World Vision Thailand gradually phased out its financial support in line with its development approach, which aims to empower communities to sustain initiatives independently. Before withdrawing, World Vision facilitated discussions among all stakeholders to identify ways to continue the project.<\/p>

Meetings were held between World Vision, the Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and parents to explore sustainable solutions. Although the local government attempted to allocate funds for the breakfast program, budget regulations made long-term support difficult. Ultimately, parents decided to contribute financially to ensure that children could continue receiving breakfast every day.<\/p>

“It is such a valuable activity. The project improves our children’s health and ensures they receive breakfast. That is why parents agreed to contribute. At present, each family contributes five baht per day, or around one hundred baht per month,” she said.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Behind every breakfast served is a woman who has become an indispensable part of the Child Development Center.<\/strong><\/p>

The children affectionately call her \u2018Grandma Lee.\u2019<\/p>

Grandma Lee is the cook who prepares breakfast for the children every morning. She began serving meals when the center had very limited resources and admits that she had little cooking experience at the time.<\/p>

“Back then, I hardly knew how to cook anything. I didn’t know many recipes, so I simply tried my best. At first, I could only fry eggs for the children,” she recalled.<\/em><\/p>

What began as a process of trial and error has evolved into a role cherished by generations of children. The children look forward to her meals not only because they enjoy the taste, but because of the care and attention she gives to each one of them. If a child does not like watermelon, she prepares bananas or other fruit instead. If a child feels hungry during the day, she always has snacks ready.<\/p>

“If a child doesn’t eat watermelon, they’ll just sit and watch the others. So I keep bananas as a backup. Sometimes I also prepare snacks for them to eat during break time.”<\/em><\/p>

Grandma Lee understands that many children arrive at the center having eaten nothing at home. “Most parents work in rubber plantations. They leave early in the morning to make a living, and sometimes the children simply wash up, get dressed, and come straight here. So they have their breakfast at the center.”<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

For Grandma Lee, the reason she continues to prepare breakfast year after year is simple: the joy of seeing children eat well and the strong bond she has developed with them.<\/p>

“When I see children eating a full meal, it makes me happy. This kind of happiness cannot be bought. Many parents tell me that after their children graduate from the center, they become fussier about food. Sometimes parents have to say, ‘Grandma Lee sent this for you,’ before the children agree to eat. Some even buy dishes like vegetable soup or five-spice eggs for their grandchildren, but the children say it doesn’t taste the same as Grandma Lee’s cooking.”<\/em><\/p>

“I honestly don’t know whether it’s delicious or not. I simply cook from the heart. People often ask me what ingredient makes the food taste so good. I always say, ‘Care.’ That’s the secret ingredient.”<\/em><\/p>

Grandma Lee\u2019s simple words reflect an important truth: breakfast is about much more than satisfying hunger. It is also about providing love, care, and a sense of warmth that children can feel from the adults who look after them every day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Today, the Breakfast for Bright Futures Project continues at Child Development Centers throughout Pho Mak Khaeng Subdistrict through the collective efforts of teachers, parents, and community members who recognize the importance of breakfast for young children.<\/p>

Although World Vision Thailand\u2019s role in the area has evolved over time, the initiative it helped establish continues to thrive. Every morning, children still gather to share breakfast together, begin the day with the energy needed for learning, and experience the care of adults who believe in their potential.<\/p>

Because a child\u2019s healthy development is never the result of one person\u2019s efforts alone.
