This simple yet resolute answer from ‘Nong Nont’, a young boy from Bueng Kan Province, reflects something every child should have: hope and confidence in their ability to build the future they envision.
When asked to imitate a police officer, Nong Nont gave a determined salute before breaking into a broad smile and a shy, childlike laugh. It may have seemed like an ordinary moment, but to World Vision Foundation of Thailand, it represented an important outcome of its work for children: seeing a child grow in confidence, develop goals in life, and dare to dream about his future.
Nong Nont is one of the children given an opportunity by WeTrade International LLC through its ‘Building Brighter Futures, Together’ initiative and the Child Sponsorship Program of World Vision Foundation of Thailand. The program helps children gain access to education, health care, child protection, and the skills they need to thrive. By working alongside families, schools, and communities, it creates an environment that supports children’s holistic development.
Growing Up on a Foundation of Love and Learning
Behind Nong Nont’s bright smile are the love and care of his grandparents, who serve as his caregivers, his source of security, and his greatest encouragement. Although the family has limited income and lives simply, they continue to do everything they can to provide the best possible care for their grandson.
The small home the three share is built from basic materials. Its corrugated metal roof provides shelter from the sun and rain but traps heat throughout the day during the summer. The home has almost no electrical appliances to make daily life more comfortable. When the accumulated heat makes it difficult to sleep at night, Nong Nont and his family often spread a mat in front of the house, relying on the natural breeze rather than the fans or air conditioning that many families may take for granted.
For Nong Nont, this way of life has been familiar since early childhood. Despite growing up with many limitations, he remains cheerful and hopeful and is dedicated to his studies.
Nong Nont’s daily routine is much like that of other school-age children. He wakes up early, gets ready for school, and begins each day with family members who care for him with love and concern. When asked about his favorite food, he immediately replied, “I like fried eggs. Grandma makes them for me.” His simple answer captures one of the small joys of his everyday life.
Yet despite the warmth of his family, Nong Nont regularly faces challenges. Some days, he leaves for school without eating breakfast. On other days, his grandmother prepares a simple meal using whatever ingredients are available at home, putting sticky rice into a ripe mango for him to eat before he leaves. Though modest, the meal reflects his grandmother’s determination to care for her grandson as best she can and ensure that he has what he needs to grow and learn each day.
At school, Nong Nont especially enjoys Thai language class and spending time with his friends. Although he is quiet, his eyes light up with enthusiasm and pride whenever he talks about his studies or school activities.
Like many other children in vulnerable communities, Nong Nont lacks some of the basic necessities that support learning and daily life. His school uniform is old and well-worn, and the zipper on his backpack is broken. Although he has school shoes, he does not have the necessary school socks, so he wears sandals to school instead.
These items may seem like minor details to many, but for school-age children, such basic necessities are essential to daily life, social confidence, and the ability to reach their full learning potential. This illustrates that creating opportunities for children to thrive involves more than providing access to education. It also means offering comprehensive support to meet their essential needs so they can move forward with confidence and dignity—as children whose futures and dreams matter just as much as anyone else’s.
A Small Dream That Reflects Great Potential
When asked what else he would like to have at home, Nong Nont did not mention anything expensive. Instead, he gave a straightforward answer, as a child might: “I’d like lots of sand so I can play in it.” His simple response reminds us that a child’s happiness may not be as complicated as adults imagine. Sometimes, all it takes is a place to play, learn, and use their imagination to make childhood meaningful.
Behind Nong Nont’s cheerful spirit, however, are several basic needs that every school-age child should have met, including school supplies, a proper uniform, and an environment conducive to learning and age-appropriate development. These needs may seem small, but they can have a lasting impact on a child’s learning opportunities, confidence, and long-term development.
Child Sponsorship Is More Than Assistance—It Creates Sustainable Opportunities
Following an assessment of his family’s living conditions and needs, Nong Nont was selected to become a sponsored child through World Vision Foundation of Thailand. However, child sponsorship is not simply about providing material goods or financial assistance. World Vision Foundation of Thailand takes a holistic approach to child development, working with children, families, schools, communities, and local partner organizations to create lasting change.
This approach encompasses education, health and nutrition, child protection, life skills, and meaningful participation by children and youth, as well as efforts to strengthen families and communities. As a result, the impact extends beyond an individual child to their family, community, and broader support systems—all of which play vital roles in the child’s long-term well-being and future.
