When unrest along the Thai–Cambodian border forced many families to flee, hundreds of children were left facing fear and uncertainty. In these confusing times, World Vision Foundation of Thailand, in collaboration with partners and youth leaders — including Sa Kaeo Provincial Office of Social Development and Human Security and Sa Kaeo Child and Family Shelter, with support from UNICEF — established a Child-Friendly Space at a temporary shelter in Sa Kaeo Province. This initiative aims to bring happiness and smiles back to children’s lives.
A Children’s Little Haven
The Child-Friendly Space is not just a play area but a haven that helps heal emotional wounds. Here, children can engage in creative activities such as colouring, listening to stories, playing games, and doing art projects. These activities help reduce stress and restore a sense of normalcy. At the same time, parents feel reassured knowing their children are in a secure environment and are closely cared for by trained child protection staff.
Activities are designed for all age groups. For young children, there are art corners, colouring, clay modelling, and number block building, along with fun games to create a safe and cheerful atmosphere. For primary school children, recreational activities include singing, dancing, and interactive games that build relationships, all supervised by teachers and youth leaders. Every activity also encourages parents to spend quality time with their children, helping to relieve stress and create meaningful moments together.
Voices from the heart
One parent shared: “I am so happy that there is a child-friendly space because it gives my child the chance to play and join activities with friends. The activities are fun and stress-free. Thank you so much!”
After the sessions, many children were smiling again. From the assessment, more than 80 children said they enjoyed and appreciated the activities.
The Child-Friendly Space is not just a play area — it is a place of hope, helping children regain their smiles and giving families and communities the strength to overcome difficult times together.
